Therapy in Your 20s
Therapy in your 20s
Mackenzie Fulleton, MSW, LCSW
Your 20s are this weird stretch where you're supposed to have your life together but you're also making every major decision for the first time…where to live, who to date, whether that job is actually a red flag or just "normal corporate stuff." Therapy in this decade isn't really about fixing problems, it’s about building a foundation. It's more like finally having someone help you sort through the pile of stuff you've been shoving in a closet since you left home. It’s about figuring out who you are, how you view the world, what you unlearn and what you keep. A lot of it can be family patterns you didn't realize you were repeating. The other half is just... learning you're allowed to want or change things.
The part nobody warns you about is how unglamorous it is. You don't have to have breakthrough moments every session. Most weeks it's just you going "so this happened, and I don't know why it bothered me so much," and your therapist gently pointing out a pattern you've had since you were twelve. It can be slow. It can be annoying…like hello, why aren’t things changing fast? But then, you’ll start seeing yourself say no…challenge yourself to do something you don’t want to do…talking kinder to yourself and realize that things are not fixed.
Therapy in your 20s isn’t about becoming a different person. It’s about accepting all parts of yourself and meeting yourself where you are at…while keeping yourself accountable for the things you want to look differently.
If you are in your 20s and are looking for a therapist, please reach out! We’d love to hear from you <3
